Medication Management and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Medication Management

What is Medication Management

For the most effective treatment and optimal results, psychotherapy is frequently combined with a medications. Medication management is a cumulative effort of referral and monitoring the medications that are being taken to confirm that they are being taken as prescribed, avoiding potentially dangerous drug interactions, limiting the chances for abuse and ensuring that patients are receiving optimal therapeutic outcomes for their specific ailment.

Clients receiving medications are regularly monitored for progress, their symptoms are continuously evaluated and systematically assessed for outcomes.

Clients are informed about proper medication usage, intended benefits and adverse side effects as well as the importance of consistency in taking medications to control the symptoms of their mental illness or substance use disorder. Clients are advised that missing doses, self-medicating or taking prescription medications at the wrong times may cause complications or failure to work properly.

MEDICATION ASSISTED TREATMENT (MAT)

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a type of intervention used in conjunction with behavioral therapy and counseling that is intended to help clients overcome their addiction.  MAT is one of the invaluable types of treatment offered at TheraCorp because it is one of the most effective and life-changing forms of care that can help clients overcome the compulsion to engage in substance abuse.

MAT’s purpose is to use approved medications to ease withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings during the treatment of substance use disorders.  Buprenorphine (Suboxone/Subutex) helps to eliminate the suffering of withdrawal during opioid detoxification, while Naltrexone (Vivitrol) blocks the euphoric effects of any opioids an individual may ingest.

When used in combination with other treatment techniques, such as counseling and behavioral therapy, it has been shown to reduce rates of relapse and improve chances of long-term recovery. MAT is an increasingly common type of treatment, particularly for clients suffering from addiction to heroin, prescription painkillers, and other opiates.

TheraCorp offers MAT at different levels of care within its continuum. Each client is assessed to determine which specific program best fits their needs.  The length of treatment also varies based on each individual’s progress.
